Are You Getting the Most Bang for Your Marketing Buck?

Contributed by Sandy Abbott, Enterprise Facilitator

Most of us are bombarded with emails daily. Wouldn’t it be great if your message to customers really stood out in this sea of information? Last week I attended an interesting presentation at Legendz Pub in Rossmore. I learned how easy it is to send a video email to your distribution list with COM F5.

This multi-platform marketing tool is available to all types and sizes of business. It allows you to record and broadcast live events as well as archive and edit the presentation for later distribution. Customers will be able to learn about your services and products, all from one easy source. A COM F5 account allows a business to be as creative as they choose. Cartoons, videos, graphics and photos can be displayed as well as links to Faceboook, Twitter and Linked In. You pay monthly for your account with no start up or cancellation fees attached.

A Newbie to the internet age, even I can see the amazing potential this marketing tool holds for both large and small businesses. Whether you choose to keep it simple, or make use of the talents of our artistic population to create a high impacy site, COMF5 will allow your clients to access you in a variety of ways, allowing you to reach more people, more effectively.

If you would like information about this marketing tool, why not give me a call at 613-476-4240. As Enterprise Facilitator for Prince Edward County, I am here to support new and expanding businesses, in a free and confidential manner.

Digital Immigrants – The Second Wave

Contributed by Dan Taylor, Economic Development Office.

Don Tapscott, one of my favourite business authors, writes about digital natives and digital immigrants. A native is someone born in the internet age and an immigrant is someone like me, born well before.

The digital immigrants I am going to write about are a little bit different. At our last #SMBB – Social Media Brown Bag session we had two young business people, Shannon Pitt (who I met digitally on Twitter) and Erik Rubadeau, come and present social media measurement tools to us. The session was very interesting and we learned tons, however something more powerful happened for me.

While the Digi-Couple seemed just post digital native in age, they were very much digital immigrants, but a different kind than what Tapscott is referring too. They had immigrated to Prince Edward County and could do so because of the digital revolution we are in the midst of. Eric and Shannon had left the big city and chose to live here and they can work anywhere in the world from little old Wellington, Ontario and they do.

Shannon is an interactive marketing consultant with a consultant agency in Toronto, where she travels to one day a week, the rest of the week she works from home. Eric is the Founder of Yeeboo Digital with regional and international clients, works from home and visits clients face to face as needed.

The extra exciting thing about Eric’s work is that he has started up a company here that he hopes to build, do more business locally, grow, hire people and expand. This is the kind of digital immigration that is helping to build our diversifying and dynamic economy.

For some perspective, our first wave of digital immigrants came around 7 years ago, the same time as DSL high speed arrived. Mature 55 plus business people, mostly consultants would live here and work elsewhere, we even have stock brokers and money traders who moved here as a result of shifting and geographically liberating technologies.

Now with the digital revolution gearing up in full swing, younger people like Shannon and Erik are choosing to move here, in some cases work elsewhere and in some cases start up their own business in a dynamic and growing field, bringing wonderful possibilities and prospects to our economy.

Digital immigrants we salute you and thank-you for choosing Prince Edward County as your home base from which to digi-commute and become enterprising locally based entrepreneurs.

Are you a digital native or digital immigrant, would you like to live in glorious Prince Edward County and work here too? If you are thinking of relocating, give me a call, perhaps Prince Edward County is the place for you? Dan Taylor 613-471-0881.

Social Media Brown Bag – twitpic

Full house again at #SMBB this week.

We were interested in trying out posting photos.. some of us weren’t sure if you needed something specialised like an iPhone do to it. Good news is you don’t!

Any photo you take or graphic you create can be posted to your twitter account. It is a simple case of uploading an image.

There are a few different applications you can use to post images to your twitter account.. some are web based, some are for phones and handhelds. @BrandyGale demonstrated twitpic. With this app you can either use the website to upload photos… or it will also give you an email address unique to your twitpic account that you can just email your images to.

@cntyfirerealtor and @thecigarchief were able to take photos on their iPhone and Android phones and post them via Hootsuite.

We had some new faces this week – great to see them out!
Tamara Porter from Design Planet here in Picton, Lisa Burke from Essential Relaxation – she got some passionate first person feedback on her products from the people in the room!, Alex Fida joined the @Angelinesblmfld Crew (our most avid attendees), @aboutimage (aka Jenna Simpson, @hilliercreek(aka Amanda Emdin).

Other topics touched on were:
How much time to spend on social media for business? You could spend 7 hours a day! We all agreed that best practice is to decide how much time you want to spend and schedule it as you would any other work task. Then measure your results and adjust accordingly.

Marilyn Toombs, another regular, is sticking with Linkedin. I think we’ll do a session on this soon. Linkedin is considered the number one professional networking site in the world. It’s purpose is to connect professionals for employment and work. We recently started a Prince Edward County group on Linkedin and are encouraging people to post employment opportunities there. You’ll need to make an account to access the group.

#SMBB a.k.a Social Media Brown Bag is held every Friday from 12.30 – 1.30 in the Large Boardroom, 2nd floor, The Edward, 280 Main Street, #Picton, #PrinceEdwardCounty

Drop by if you’re in town…
