Looking Back on 10 years of County Biz Columns

At the start of 2011 I decided to review the last 10 yrs of my Picton Gazette “Our Creative Rural Economy” columns about people doing business in the County. 10 years! I was surprised and delighted with how many people and businesses I’ve featured: 109 – and I’ve only scratched the surface, from brand new enterprises to venerable established firms, including a 180 yr old drug store. Most are still going strong, many have grown a lot, only 5 have folded – that’s a 95% retention rate! The full list is at the end of this post.

Of the 109, 62 were established, 47 were new and 20 focused on young people.  The Services sector got the most ink, which reflects the wider Canadian economy that is dominated by service industries and growing less labour-intensive &  more high-tech. Five were about Manufacturing, 9 Wellness; 10 Tourism; 10 Culinary; 11 Arts and Culture; 30 Agriculture (including several in a series we called Farmers Faces) and 35 Services – from financial to construction to dog grooming.

I showed my husband the list and he pointed out a glaring omission. Him. Oops. In business in the County for 11 years he deserves recognition, so I started the new year with a profile of my favourite County artist: Graham Davies. Very briefly: a fine art photographer with a photojournalist background. A rare beast these days: a master of the art of black and white, real film photography and darkroom printing. He came from the UK to Toronto in 1993 and to the County in 1999.  His Toronto colleagues thought he was crazy to leave the city back then. They don’t any more, not with PEC featured regularly in news and lifestyle pages. Best known for dramatic B&W nudes and landscapes, he shoots digital for commercial work but is a fierce champion of B&W for his fine art and portraiture – particularly those body portraits, as he calls them. He proves there is no age or weight limit to beauty and art.  A professional photographer since his teens, he looks puzzled when you mention retirement. He just finished shooting for the Arts and Taste Trail brochure and says his life and work have never felt better. A good quote, I think, to kick off another year of Our Creative Rural Economy columns. Now take a deep breath and check out that list of 109 business.

10 Crowdsourced Reasons to like Wellington – Part 2

Contributed by Dan Taylor, Economic Development Office.

In my last post I mentioned that Wolf Braun contacted me to let me know that Wellington had some great attributes, following a blog that I had written about PIcton.

Instead of coming up with all the great reason’s to like Wellington myself, I thought I would reach out to the crowd in facebook and twitter and source your ideas. Here goes, in no particular order.

1. @tallpoppycafe says “Friendly neighbours, great community involvement at the school, Home Hardware will bend over backwards for you.”

2. Shannon Colleen Pitt “The lake(s). Walking on the beach in town. Being able to head to a winery if the lcbo is closed. The tall poppy cafe. Side Street Gallery. And, I heard it’s the most patriotic town in Canada.

3. Alyson Cranshaw How about the new arena? Or the Dukes, even? Can we claim West Lake? The lighthouse is pretty…ooooh!! Pumpkinfest!! – Lol – you’re making me homesick and I’m only in Kingston

4. Bethel Organics Loves the Retro LCBO and the Magical Mushroom Factory.

5. Phil Norton Wellington is County BASEBALL central ….the Field of Dreams….home of no less than 5 PEC champion teams in the 2010 Quinte minor baseball league

6. Jonas Newman The Park on the Lake, East and Main.

7. @OntarioCulinary Wellington and surroundings…These folks R gr8! @Rosehall_Run @normhardie @grangewinery @hinterlandfizz @KarloEstates @TheOldThird

8. @PECVacations I Hear great things about East & Main, and can’t wait to eat there. Also love the garden store on the edge of the village

9. Erin Bennett Traer Dan there is a good little video on the Wellington website

10 @SandbankHomes Does snow count? Can’t limit it to only 2, @grangewinery @SandbanksWinery @eastandmain The Dukes! Sandbanks Bar & Grill

I couldn’t fit all the great things in, so there is at least one more blog about this. Stay tuned.

2 Great Reason’s to like Wellington. Part 1

Contributed by Dan Taylor, Economic Development Office.

I am sure there are way more than two great reason’s to live in Wellington. But I recently posted a blog titled 5 Good Reasons to live in Picton and I received some feedback from Wolf Braun and Alyson Cranshaw.

Wolf is a Wellington based real-estate agent with an executive past in the packaged goods industry and I think some high tech background too, he is certainly quite tech savvy. Wolf commented on my Facebook page “what about Wellington” and I responded that I would gladly blog about Wellington if he could provide me with some content which he immediately did with the video link above.

So clearly golf is one of the great reasons to like about Wellington. Then Alyson Crasnshaw, a regular feature at the Wellington Golf Course, someone who is highly active in the local performing arts scene and a soon to be teacher indicated that she lives in Wellington and that was another great reason to like Wellington. Who am I to argue?

So it appears my Facebook friends have started to write this blog and I ask that you finish it. Part 2 will be written by you, so please provide me with the ammunition to write about the top 10 or for that matter 100 things about Wellington and it will form the basis for one of my next blogs.
